  • Hospital requests: Blood gas syringe for VBG (Medical staff collect) Heparin tube acceptable if bicarbonate is being requested along with other bloods.
  • Community requests: collect into heparin tubes, tube must be full.
  • Pathlab Whakatane: Not available in Whakatane on weekends.

Ward collected Extended Electrolytes not available at PLWHK at the weekend due to no routine biochemistry courier to PLBOP for Bicarbonate. WGA and WED staff can measure Bicarbonate from a blood gas syringe using the ED based gas analyser.

Please note if SST received for ICA and Heparin received for Bicarbonate together, put under separate lab numbers.
