To minimise loss of glucose through glycolysis, serum should be removed from red cells as soon as possible. Specimens that cannot be rapidly separated should be collected into tubes containing fluoride, monoiodoacetate or mannose. Storage of serum is only valid for 7 days if removed from cells (i.e. gel layer) or in a specimen container with preservative (fluoride oxalate)
