Collection Information

Preparation

  • Samples should be collected as soon after 28h as practical
  • Babies <1500g birthweight should have a further sample at 2 weeks of age
  • Babies <1000g birthweight should have a third sample at 4 weeks of age
  • Neonatal unit babies should have samples on the blue cards
  • Samples must be dry before being placed into plastic specimen bags
  • Venous samples can be used by dripping onto the card from the syringe or a dropper

  • New-born babies are tested for the following conditions - PKU, MSUD, galactosemia, cystic fibrosis, biotinidase deficiency, congenital hypothyroidism, congenital adrenal hyperplasia, fatty acid oxidation disorders and amino acid breakdown disorders.
  • Each circle should be filled to the outer rim with blood.
